Vision to Victory: A Program that Inspires

Rain couldn’t deter the amazing group of students behind Louisville’s first annual Vision to Victory Walk. Despite the fact that the original date had been completely rained out the week before, the students stayed optimistic, rescheduled it for the following weekend, and were there bright and early on a Saturday morning to meet me outside Waterfront Park with smiling faces and firm handshakes. The entire group made such a strong impression.

Louisville Urban League Vision to Victory Kevin FieldsThese wonderful young people created the Vision to Victory program after receiving support from the America’s Promise Alliance GradNation movement. They are youth from Louisville Urban League’s Project Ready program. Kevin Fields, Vice President of Programs at Louisville Urban League has great pride in the accomplishments of the organization over the past years, and praised this current group of young adults who he said are making big steps to help change the way students think about higher education.

During the ceremony, college graduates came up to speak, sharing with the new high school graduates tips on successful college completion – things like being willing to sacrifice fun for study time, good time management skills, and determination.

Str8Legit and Company, a very talented dance group, also performed during the event, showing even more of the promise that is up-and-coming within this generation of young people.

The hope is that this walk becomes an annual event that will attract even more students to participate and more of the community to get involved.

Numerous initiatives large and small are taking place in our region to promote higher education and create a place where we can develop and foster the bright minds of tomorrow. The Vision to Victory walk is a great example of a program that is changing the lives of young people.
