The Kilgore House & Garden Tour 2012 is This Weekend

Kilgore House and Garden TourFor the past 11 years, people in and around Louisville have enjoyed self-guided tours of some of the most beautiful resident gardens the city has to offer. It’s all part of the The Kilgore House & Garden Tour, and it’s happening this weekend, May 19-20.

It’s kind of like Homearama for the garden, and if you’ve been in years’ past, you know the hours of hard work these homeowners put into creating and maintaining the beautiful, tranquil setting in their yards. Peggy Campbell, homeowner of “The Secret Garden,” one of the gardens on this year’s tour, said she dedicates 10-15 hours a week to her garden.

Peggy’s home is one of five historic properties featured in this year’s event. Other featured homes include:

  • The Gardens at Oxmoor Estate (also known as the Bullitt Estate)
  • The Lyndon Cottage, an estate dating to the 1800s
  • Heron’s Roost, with gardens, fountains, statuary and a koi pond
  • Soldier’s Retreat, with a reconstructed version of a 1793 home damaged by the New Madrid earthquake in 1811 and then a lightning strike in 1840

This event also serves as the primary fundraiser for the nonprofit Kilgore Samaritan Counseling Center, which provides mental health services to patients. Over the past 11 years, ticket sales from the tour have raised $127,000 for the Kilgore Samaritan Counseling Center.

All tour guests will receive discounts at two Louisville restaurants—Martini Italian Bistro and Mitchell’s Fish House. All of the homes in this year’s event are in the Hurstbourne area. Visit the website for a map of the area, more information about the tour, and to purchase tickets.
