Ohio River Bridges Groundbreaking

Groundbreaking for Ohio River Bridges ProjectFor the leaders of our region, the Ohio River Bridges Project has been a dream for years. But today, as the groundbreaking ceremony took place at the Port of Indiana in Jeffersonville, that dream is on its way to becoming a reality.

As the Bridges Authority, the bridges coalition, Kix leadership, elected leaders from the region, and so many others who’ve shared in the dream stood together to witness this groundbreaking event, you could feel the excitement and envision the opportunity these bridges will help to provide.

While the Indiana Department of Transportation broke ground on the first phase of the new East End Crossing today, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is moving forward with plans to begin construction early next year on the Downtown Crossing. Construction on the East End Crossing is expected to be completed in 2017 according to the Ohio River Bridges Cost and Schedule plan.

What’s truly unique about East End Crossing from an economical standpoint, is the fact that this bridge essentially connects right into River Ridge Commerce Center. This implication is important for not only job seekers looking for easier, less taxing commutes, but also for attracting more businesses to our region. In an interview with Inside Indiana Business with Gerry Dick, Wendy Dant Chesser explains that she believes, “Amazon chose the site [River Ridge] based on what the site had to offer.”

Be sure to check back at the Kix blog as we keep you informed on the progress of the project and continue our long time advocacy. In the short term, we are keenly interested helping the contracted firms meet their workforce needs and most especially making sure local job seekers can maximize opportunities associated with the bridges construction.
