Growing Leaders in Our Region

“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” — Jack Welch

Congressional Leadership ClassA local Congressman, Indiana 9th District’s Todd Young, believes in this principle, and is helping to grow leaders right here in our region.

The Kix team recently had the opportunity to visit the Mid America Science Park in Scottsburg to see Congressman Young’s Congressional Leadership Program (CLP) in action. CLP, which was developed by Young’s staff, introduces District 9 college and graduate students to their region, with the goal of helping them develop leadership skills so that they can more effectively serve their own communities.

The selected students are District 9 residents who are attending college or graduate school. The application process was extremely competitive, and the class size limited to just 12 students. Those chosen to participate were top students majoring in Political Science or Public Service related disciplines. The workload consists of five one-day courses, spread across the entire summer, and covers additional subject areas such as economic development, local government, state government and more.

Justin Stevens, from Congressman Young’s Constituent Services office, indicated that the competition for the 12 slots was strenuous, and that those chosen were all extremely well qualified. “CLP is designed to help motivated students learn more about the strengths and challenges of their community and how they might live a life engaged in addressing those issues,” said Stevens. “And we’re in Scottsburg to learn about the challenges facing Rural Indiana today.”

It’s a fact that for any organization or business, strong leadership and success go hand-in-hand. And with the challenges facing our region, developing strong leaders for tomorrow is more important than ever. Kudos to Congressman Young and his staff, for a job well done!
